Rice water is the cloudy, starchy water left after soaking or cooking rice. Rinsing hair with it is a long tradition in parts of East Asia, and it became a social media favorite. Many people find it makes hair feel smoother and look shinier. The claims that it makes hair grow faster are not backed by studies.

Quick answer: A rice water rinse once or twice a week may make hair feel smoother and look shinier, mainly because the starch coats the strands. It can leave low porosity or protein-sensitive hair stiff and dry, so follow with conditioner. There is no scientific evidence that rice water makes hair grow faster or stops hair loss.

Where the rice water trend comes from

The best-known story is from the Yao women of Huangluo village in China, famous for very long hair and for washing it with fermented rice water. In Japan, court women of the Heian period are said to have combed their hair with rice water. These traditions are real and lovely, but long hair in a community also reflects genetics, gentle handling and rarely cutting it.

A systematic review of rice-washed water describes these hair uses as traditional practices that lack proper scientific validation. Cleveland Clinic dermatologists say much the same: the benefits are anecdotal, but there is little risk in trying it.

What's in rice water

  • Starch. The main ingredient. It can coat the hair surface, adding a little body and slip. See rice starch.
  • Small amounts of protein and amino acids. Far less than in a protein treatment, but enough to stiffen some hair types.
  • Inositol. A sugar-like substance found in rice. It is often said to cling to damaged hair and help it, but this has not been shown in published human studies.
  • Traces of vitamins and minerals. The amounts are small, and hair is not a living tissue that can "feed" on them.

Hair products sometimes include hydrolyzed rice protein, a processed form with smaller protein pieces made to cling to hair. It is part of the wider amino acids and proteins group.

What rice water may do for hair

  • Smoother feel. Starch film can reduce friction between strands, which may make detangling easier.
  • More shine. A smoother surface reflects light better.
  • A little body. Starch can make fine hair feel thicker for a day or two.
  • Less breakage over time, possibly. If hair tangles less, it may break less. This is plausible, not proven.

What it will not do: make hair grow faster from the root, thicken thinning hair, or reverse hair loss.

How to make rice water

Soaked method

  1. Rinse half a cup of uncooked rice to remove dust.
  2. Cover with about two cups of clean water.
  3. Soak for around 30 minutes, stirring now and then.
  4. Strain the cloudy water into a clean bottle.

Boiled method Cook rice with extra water and save the starchy water once it has cooled completely. It is thicker than soaked rice water.

Fermented method Some people leave soaked rice water at room temperature for about a day so it turns sour. It smells strong. Fermented rice water contains bacteria, and there is no evidence fermenting makes it work better. If you try it, keep it short and throw it out if it smells rotten or shows mold.

Storage Keep rice water in the fridge and make small, fresh batches. Dilute it with plain water if it feels heavy on your hair.

How to use a rice water rinse

  1. Shampoo as usual.
  2. Pour rice water over your hair, and your scalp if it tolerates it. Massage gently.
  3. Leave it on for 5 to 20 minutes.
  4. Rinse well with plain water.
  5. Follow with conditioner, especially if your hair tends to feel dry.
  6. Use it once or twice a week at most.

If your hair feels stiff, rough or tangly afterward, cut back or stop.

Who should be careful

  • Low porosity hair. Starch and protein tend to sit on top and build up, leaving hair stiff and dull.
  • Protein-sensitive hair. Some hair feels straw-like after protein. Try a short rinse, well diluted.
  • Dry, damaged hair. Rice water does not add moisture, so pair it with a rich conditioner or mask.
  • Flaky or itchy scalp. If you have dandruff or a sensitive scalp, keep rice water on the lengths and stop if itching gets worse.

Protein overload: what it means

"Protein overload" is a hair-care term, not a medical one. It describes hair that feels hard, brittle and straw-like after too many protein or starch products. Rice water alone is low in protein, but combined with protein masks and protein-rich leave-ins in the same week, some hair reacts this way. The fix is simple: pause protein products and use moisturizing conditioners and hair masks for a few washes.

What not to combine

  • Rice water and a protein mask in the same week, if your hair is protein-sensitive.
  • Leaving it on overnight. It can dry hair and smell sour.
  • Old batches that smell rotten or look moldy.

How long until you see results

Hair may feel smoother and shinier right after the first rinse. Any effect on breakage would only show over weeks of gentle care. If you see no difference after a month, it is fine to stop.

When to see a dermatologist

Rice water will not help true hair loss. See a dermatologist or doctor if you notice:

  • Thinning hair, a widening part or bald patches
  • Sudden heavy shedding
  • An itchy, red, scaly or painful scalp
  • Hair that breaks off suddenly despite gentle care

Many causes of hair loss, such as thyroid problems, low iron and pattern hair loss, can be diagnosed and treated.

FAQ

Does rice water make hair grow faster?

No study in people shows that. It may help you keep length by reducing tangles and breakage, which can look like faster growth.

Can I use rice water on curly hair?

Yes, if your curly hair tolerates protein and starch. Deep-condition afterward and watch for stiffness.

Is store-bought rice water better than homemade?

Products are made to be stable and are usually preserved, so they keep longer. They are not proven to work better for hair.

Can I leave rice water in my hair?

A short rinse is better. Left in, the starch can dry into a stiff, flaky film.
